Zotero: Self-study approach

On this page is a playlist of videos that should take about 45 minutes to work through (without application). If you want to apply the steps as you go, it will naturally take longer to work through them.

Video 1

In the first video, I basically ‘show you around”. If it is your first time working with the desktop app and the Word plugin, I would suggest you watch this video. If not, feel free to skip this one and move onto the next.

Video 2

This video shows you how to install the Microsoft Word plugin which will allow your Zotero desktop app to communicate with your Word documents.

Video 3

This video shows you how to add PDF documents to Zotero to use as references, how to add references to which you do not have an electronic copy, such as a hard copy book. As well as how to use an ISBN number to add a reference to your library and standalone notes as parent items.

Video 4

You can also use Zotero as a document repository and keep notes for yourself related to the documents. This video will show you how to organise your Zotero library using the collections function.

Video 5

This video shows you how to annotate your PDF documents in Zotero using the highlighter tool, the select area tool, and adding notes directly on your document. I also show you how to create notes from the annotations you have made and how to copy and paste those annotations when inserting direct quotations into a Microsoft Word document

Video 6

Once you have added a few references to your library, you can go ahead and reference those sources in your Word document. In this video I show you how.

Video 7

When you’ve added references to your Word document body, you can discover the magic in this video by creating an entire bibliography with the click of a button.

Video 8

As a last step, you may want to change your referencing style according to your institutional or journal guidelines. This short video shows you how.

Video 9

This video shows you how to edit a citation when you notice an error in your reference, such as changing the spelling of a name, changing a date, changing the title of an article and so forth.
